The Role of Natural Solutions
As a health coach, I work with individuals to help them engage in holistic, self-directed healthcare practices and personally experience the powerful benefits of essential oils. I often share daily habits and practical tips, along with the use of essential oils, to help support the organs and systems of the body with natural solutions.
Let’s apply this approach to a common health goal: Healthy Hormones.
The Megaphone Effect of Hormones
Hormones are secreted by the Endocrine system directly into the bloodstream. These chemical substances are messenger molecules that control and coordinate the activities of cells able to respond to the presence of the hormone (receptors). This binding initiates a sequence of intracellular signals which can dramatically affect the behavior of the cell or how the genes are expressed. And small amounts of these substances can create very large responses in the body.
We have all experienced this effect during the body’s growth and development periods, physical and emotional transitions before/after childbirth, and also as we age. It’s a remarkable thing to watch the growth of a baby in its first year, or how quickly height comes to our children once they hit puberty! This is the work of your hormones!
For both men and women, when our hormones are not produced at optimal levels, it is something we will notice! Metabolic function can become compromised and it can also affect our ability to produce energy. We may experience weight gain, loss of muscle mass, or thinning hair, decreased sex drive, and nervousness, anxiousness, or irritability.
With this megaphone effect (small amount that creates a dramatic impact), it is easy to see how quickly our body can become compromised when hormone balance is off even just a little bit!
My Favorite Essential Oils to Support Healthy Hormones (and other systems too!)
1. Peppermint is the essential oil I grab to boost my energy when I am fighting fatigue. As I breathe in this minty menthol-like aroma, it immediately opens my airways, sends much needed oxygen to my brain to improve my focus and concentration in groggy or scattered moments. When applied topically, it is immediately cooling to the skin when I feel overheated!*
2. Wild Orange essential oil uplifts my mood and quickly clears away witchy emotions. This invigorating fruity aromatic compound contains powerful antioxidants that support a healthy immune system and promote overall cellular health, a key foundation for healthy hormone function. A drop or two in my glass of water provides a burst of flavor or I simply diffuse it to revitalize and energize a stress filled day.*
3. We all know and love Lavender essential oil for its ability to calm anxiousness and stress. It can be particularly calming to support healthy moods during menstruation and menopause. I also find it reduces my mental chatter, especially as I lay quietly waiting for sleep to wash over me. I add a few drops of Lavender to my pillows, bedding, or the bottoms of my feet to prepare for a restful night’s sleep.
4. Clary Sage essential oil may be less commonly known but is equally powerful to calm and soothe the nervous system. This oil can be applied to the abdomen during menstrual cycles to calm and soothe any discomfort. Did you know you can also add three to four drops to your shampoo or conditioner to promote healthier looking hair and scalp?!
5. Sandalwood essential oil’s sweet, woody aroma is both grounding and uplifting so it’s no wonder it is the oil I grab when I need a boost. I simply apply a drop over my heart and breathe in deeply! While I get this mood-enhancing aroma, I’m also doing something good for my overall cellular health!
