What’s Expected for the New Year?
The holidays are here (yikes) and the new year is right around the corner. As we look at this past year, you might say “Whew! So glad THAT year is over!” I can’t wait for a fresh start! I bet I am not alone in that we all want to clean out all the old yuck and welcome health and happiness back into our lives!
Want a simple solution to do just that!?
Here’s a way to PULL your way to a better 2025…Oil Pulling, that is!
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic therapy for maintaining oral hygiene. It is the practice of swishing oils from plants--typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil--in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out. Because the mouth is considered as the mirror of the general health of the body, improved oral health may offer the possibility of other health benefits, too.
The health of your mouth has a direct influence on your overall health! “Oral health and general health are interrelated. The oral cavity harbors billions of microorganisms, some of these contribute to the development or progression of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, etc. Oral health and general health are interrelated, so it is very important to maintain oral health.” ~Oil Pulling for Maintaining Oral Hygiene – A Review, NCBI, PMC5198813
“Unlike some so-called natural home remedies, it's not a practice that's based on pseudo-science. Recent studies show that oil pulling helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath.” ~Should You Try Oil Pulling by Colleen Oakley on webmd.com/oral-health/features/oil-pulling
How does that work?
“Most microorganisms inhabiting the mouth consist of a single cell; cells covered with a lipid, or fatty, membrane, which is the cell's skin. When these cells come into contact with oil, a fat, they naturally adhere to each other.” ~Jessica T. Emery, DMD
What are the Potential Benefits of Oil Pulling?
Besides the gifts to oral health and whiter teeth, there are many other potential benefits you might enjoy with regular oil pulling:
Eliminate bad breath
Rid the body of unwanted toxins and microorganisms
Balance the terrain of the intestinal tract, which can improve absorption of nutrients, and boost both metabolic and immune function!
Relief for sinuses and congestion
Improve sleep
Increase energy
As we improve the microbiome of the mouth and digestive tract, imagine the cascade of benefits which may enhance overall cellular health!
Oil Pulling Basics
As with anything, there’s a safe way to do it and things to avoid! Let’s review best practices and tips for maximizing your benefits!
1. Combine one tablespoon of coconut oil with your chosen essential oil (see list below) and put in your mouth. Only use food grade or better oils.
2. Do gentle swishing, pulling the oil back and forth through your teeth. Keep your jaw and cheek muscles relaxed. 20 minutes is your goal. Start with 5 minutes and work your way up! [Spit it out along the way if it feels overwhelming, and then continue swishing again.]
3. When done, rinse your mouth well with warm water BEFORE eating or drinking.
4. Repeat every morning for best results. At a minimum, do it several times per week.
While pulling, keep your head level to control the liquid in your mouth. Tilting your head back may give you an urge to swallow.
DO NOT SWALLOW. As you swish, the oil mixes with saliva and increases in volume and in toxicity. Do not spit it in the sink, drain, or toilet as it is toxic and may clog pipes. It is best to spit it into the trashcan or a disposable napkin.
