Sharing Common Experiences
Have you noticed how easy it is to share certain experiences with your family and friends? You may tell a story about a new store or exhibit you visited, a movie you watched, a series you binge-watched, or even recommend a product you love.
In these situations, why exactly do we share? What’s in it for us?
In most circumstances, we receive no reward except to see another person delight at what brought us delight; to see another person smile by sharing an experience that made us smile. In effect, we are simply paying forward a moment that brought us joy with those we love, hoping that they too will enjoy the moment as much as we did.
This dynamic reminds me of a brilliant quote by St. Thomas Aquinas from Summa Theologica, On Prayer and the Contemplative Life: “To love is to will the good of another.”
Sharing with others, willing their good, is an act of love.
It is in this posture that I share solutions for common health experiences with you.
Solutions for Life’s Little Emergencies
Let’s start with my story of love for my son, Dominic.
Dominic is a handsome young man of 30 years, with big brown eyes that will captivate your heart. As adorable as he is, he’s had some serious health challenges. He was in the ICU at birth for 11 weeks--imagine having a baby and waiting 77 days to bring him home--and 25 more times by the time he was 17 years old. So it is truly an understatement to say we’ve seen our share of life’s little emergencies.
Even though many of the situations Dominic experienced became significant events requiring hospitalization, we all experience these same situations to varying degrees during our own lives too.
Supporting optimal respiratory, digestive, and immune function is a primary focus for Dominic, and is a laudable health and wellness goal for us all. We also direct our focus to finding solutions for better sleep, anxiousness, emotional balance, tense muscle tone, and pain. Does this list capture your focus as well? I am sure it does!
Here are the safe, affordable, and effective natural solutions we use in response to life’s little emergencies! And I propose to you that as these are effective solutions to address Dominic heightened needs, they will certainly work for you!
Ø Sneezy, Drippy – It is true, I love the spring with its promise of renewal. However, the mechanism by which renewal happens can wreak havoc on our upper respiratory system resulting in an uncomfortable response from the immune system with a runny, itchy, congested nose, sneezing, and of course, the annoyingly itchy, watery, red eyes.
Suggested Solution: For an experience like this, it is Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint essential oils to the rescue!
Lavender essential oil is what I grab first. In a shot glass of water, in a capsule, or 2 drops under the tongue provides quick relief from seasonal and environmental threats.* Peppermint helps to open my airways and Lemon helps to stop the leaky faucet in my nose.*
Ø Tender Tummy – Symptoms of digestive distress may include stomach or abdominal discomfort, belching, gas, queasiness, the frequency (or infrequency) of movements, and other issues.
Suggested Solution: For these experiences, send in the Italians (you know, the spices used in many Italian kitchens)!
To soothe the occasional tender tummy, reduce uncomfortable gas and bloating, and aid in the digestion of food, many essential oils can provide the support you need!* Common solutions include my favorites Fennel, Ginger, Coriander, and Spearmint. Enjoy quick relief when you add a few drops to water or tea, put in a capsule, or massage the abdomen to soothe and calm.*
Ø Anxiousness, Sleep – Day or night, tension, nerves, and our emotional state can disrupt our peace. This type of ongoing stress can contribute to inflammation, craving carbs (overeating and weight-gain as a result) and increase the risk of certain diseases.
