In, On, & Around You
I’ve been reading more and more about the prevalence of toxins which surround our everyday living…in the air, in our food supply, in our cleaning products, in our personal care products…the increasing toxic load our bodies must bear is alarming. These toxins are IN, ON, and AROUND us and taking a toll on our health.
We are all aware of certain products which must NOT be ingested. These products carry appropriate warning labels, like this: “CAUTION: Harmful if swallowed, skin and eye irritant. Keep out of reach of children.” Despite these warnings, these products are commonly found under the sink and in bathrooms of many households. There must be a better way!!
Given the waves of threats we’ve been exposed to over the last two years, we all seek ways to disinfect surfaces. What are the products you use to protect yourself from harmful threats and cleanse your home? What’s their safety ratings?
“The Environmental Working Group found 146 chemicals in Comet, one of the most popular household disinfectants. Some of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, asthma, and reproductive disorders. The most toxic of the chemicals found in Comet, including formaldehyde, benzene, chloroform and toluene, are not even listed on the label.” ~Dr. Christiane Northrup, MD.
Do these products really offer us effective solutions? Even if they are effective, are they safe to use by our families and loved ones?
We are cautious when we use them (hopefully) but what about if we breathe them in or get them on our skin. If it is ON you, it is also IN you, being absorbed through the skin. If it is in the air, you ARE breathing it in.
What we breathe is being “internalized” through our respiratory system. Simply open a can a gasoline, or a bottle of bleach or ammonia and you’ll notice how quickly you feel its adverse effects. Now think of the aerosol sprays and those fragrant plug-ins…have you checked the ingredients list lately? These plug-ins typically contain toxic chemicals such as 2, 5-dichlorophenol (2, 5-DCP) and 1, 4-dichlorobenzone (1, 4-DCB), as well as endocrine-disrupting phthalates. How can that be called an “Air Freshener”?
There are so many more examples, it is too lengthy to note them all here. One thing is certain, there is both a short-term and long-term impact on the organs and systems of the body: Disruption of hormone and endocrine function, changes in cell structure, neurological damage, infertility, and links to cancer, just to name a few. To attain and sustain health, we must reduce our toxic load.
Want safer, more effective solutions?
Here are some simple ways to create simple, natural, and safe solutions all around you!
Natural All-Purpose Cleanser
Combine ¼ cup of white vinegar with 1-¾ cups of water to a 16-ounce spray bottle. Add 3 drops each of Ginger, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, and Wild Orange essential oil. Spritz on surfaces and wipe clean. Not only does this cleanse surfaces, but its fantastic aroma is also natural and non-toxic. This blend may also provide protection from environmental and seasonal threats!* Now that’s what I like: A side benefit rather than a side effect!
Natural Bleach Recipe (credit, my dear friend, Paulette Agoglia)
Combine in a 32oz. spray bottle:
¾ cup of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
¼ cup Organic Lemon Juice
1 drop of each Lemon, Lime, Siberian Fir, Siberian Fir, Pine, Citronella, Tea Tree, and Cilantro essential oils. These oils have powerful abilities to disinfect!
Fill the rest of bottle with distilled water.
Usage Tips
Please use a glass or HDPE oil safe plastic bottle!
This natural bleach is color safe. Add ½ cup to whites and wash in hot water.
Great for pre-soaking.
Great for toilets and tile. (Add baking soda to sink for an extra scrub.)
Just a note...have a little patience. We live in a world of instant gratification. Let it soak for a little time. It's SOOO much safer to use for you and your family! Regular bleach causes respiratory issues, and we don't want that! It's so easy to make and it's ALL NATURAL. Our families are worth it!
Toilet Scrub
Combine ½ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of white vinegar in a small wide-mouth jar. Add 10 drops of Tea tree essential oil and mix well. Then, scrub away the toilet ickies!
Usage tip: Change up this recipe using Lemon essential oil and it makes a great scrub for the sink, too!
Mites Out
Add one cup baking soda in a 12 oz mason jar with 10 drops of each Eucalyptus, Clove, Peppermint, and Rosemary essential oils. Cover the jar and shake.
Usage Tips
Remove all sheets from mattress. Sprinkle all over bed using a sifter. Leave on mattress for at least 1 hour (the longer the better). Then vacuum up with your vacuum hose attachment. Repeat every 2-3 months.
Natural Air Freshener
Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to your diffuser and safely create your signature aroma. In this way, you control the mood of the room as you truly freshen the air. Here are a few of my favorites!
Apple Blossoms: 3 drops of Cardamom, 2 drops each of Douglas Fir and Frankincense, with 1 drop of Grapefruit
California Coast: 2 drops each of Frankincense, Cedarwood, and Wild Orange with 1 drop of Rosemary
Cleanse & Clear: 5 drops of Copaiba, 4 drops of Rosemary, with 2 drops of each Peppermint and Clary Sage
