Good health is the foundation on which to build your life, your experiences and those of your family. My mom often encouraged me to carefully consider decisions that would affect my health and well-being, saying: “Once you lose your health, you’ve lost everything.”
In 1860, the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with writing: “The first wealth is health.” I invite you to consider what life would be like if you invested in your health with this axiom as your guiding principle.
Intervention as a Modern Approach
The World Health Organization’s definition of health emphasizes that HEALTH is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Considering that definition, we as a society are NOT healthy.
The NIH includes these illnesses as our biggest health challenges today: Heart Disease and Stroke, Cancer, Opioid Addition, Infectious Diseases, and Diabetes. This is not just a quality of life issue as many of these are also leading causes of death. And even more alarming is that these chronic illnesses are common and costly, and many are preventable!
In response, the modern approach primarily directs its efforts at symptom management. “Unmet root needs” create the underlying “root causes”, and when these root needs are ignored, symptoms persist, and frustration abounds.
“Chasing those symptoms with synthetic, unnatural, manufactured solutions with their accompanying side effects, too often results in new symptoms to chase. And that makes for a very profitable business model! One that generates over $9 trillion globally. I ask you, are we healthier because of it?”+
Caveat: Are there times when having solutions at our fingertips is just what’s needed? Of course! However, while firefighting is great for acute healthcare urgencies, it is not a sustainable approach to wellness.
“The bottom line: The intervention model is simply NOT well-care. It is like playing a game of whack-a-mole! And you know how that goes! The same things just keep rearing their ugly head. Our health is the same. Chasing symptoms kicks the can down the road and can increase risks as real causes go unresolved.”+
What is a Wellness Lifestyle?
A Wellness Mindset is all about nurturing your well-being. This natural approach focuses on intentional efforts aimed at meeting the body’s needs and resolving root causes…often with side benefits, not side effects!
The result? Considerably less symptoms and a far better quality of life!
“Let’s simplify the natural approach even more: Solving root causes is about too much of the wrong things (toxicity) and not enough of the right things (deficiency).”
Too much of the wrong thing can look like excessive exposure to toxins from cleaning and personal care products with harmful, endocrine disrupting chemicals, too much stress, ultra processed food, a body overrun with unwanted guests, fat cells blown up with toxins, or constipation.
Too little of the right thing might be a lack of adequate nutrition, too little sleep, water, or exercise, and a need for more loving relationships. You get the idea!”+
