Essential oils are the molecules released from plants through a distillation process. These molecules give plants their aroma. These naturally occurring aromatic compounds are in other words, nature’s chemistry!
Aromatic chemistry holds such a gift for the human body at the cellular level.
To appreciate the benefits and synergy of these gifts, let’s first enhance our understanding of how cells are designed and some of their unique functions.
Cool Things About Your Cells
The cell is the basic building block of all living things. During its life, cells will make copies of themselves (biogenesis), perform a specialized function, and self-destruct (apoptosis) when not performing either of the other two functions correctly.
Towards our goal of a better appreciation of the gifts of aromatic chemistry in the body, we’ll focus on two specific functions of the cell membrane.
1. Gatekeeper – The cell membrane separates what is inside the cell from what is outside the cell. It is made of lipids that are semipermeable and one of its jobs is to regulate what enters and exits the cell. I often describe this as the bouncer standing at the door of a nightclub deciding who gets to enter the building.
2. Cell Signaling – The cell membrane facilitates communication and signaling between cells. For example, “Proteins on the cell “mark” that cell so that other cells can identify it. The membrane also has receptors that allow it to carry out certain tasks when molecules such as hormones bind to those receptors.” ~biologydictionary.net
Pretty cool, right? And with upwards of 30 trillion cells in the human body (that’s a 3 with 13 zeros!!!), there’s a lot going on at any given moment! This constant and voluminous activity level could use some supervision, information, and guidance!
This is where aromatic chemistry has a lot to offer. First, as a messenger molecule, the chemical constituents of essential oils provide information and instruction to the cells. Second, essential oils are made of the same substance as the cell membrane (lipid soluble) enhancing its ability to communicate with the cell.
Key point: These two factors provide for intelligent conversation and advice that gets heeded!
Even More Powerful Than Imagined
Essential oils are even more powerful than you might imagine!
Imagine a line of substances (both good and bad) waiting outside the cell membrane like the long line of various people waiting for the bouncer to let them in. We know that when the VIPs show up to the nightclub, the bouncer immediately brings them to the front of the line, and much to the displeasure of everyone else waiting on line, they get to go inside first. Essential oils are considered VIPs by the cell membrane and are immediately allowed inside! Once inside, the essential oil can share “instructions” which are designed to positively influence the DNA of the cell and other cellular processes.
Key point: Essential oils are given preferential treatment by the cell membrane!
This preferential treatment creates some of the dramatic and immediate outcomes we experience when we use essential oils. In addition, when the essential oil binds with the receptor sites on the cell membrane that means other things can’t!! This is known as competitive inhibition and is something we want when we are dealing with certain substances waiting in line which can harm the cell (like viruses).
Key point: Aromatic messenger molecules are made to be first responders.
Aromatic Chemistry Cells Love
Here are some of my favorite essential oils to protect the integrity of the cell and support cellular health!
· Rosemary, Siberian Fir, and Eucalyptus essential oils help to provide targeted support and cleansing of the cells in the respiratory system.*
· Black Pepper, Copaiba, Melissa, and Tea Tree essential oils help to provide targeted support for cells of the immune system.*
· Clove, Thyme, and Wild Orange essential oils provide powerful antioxidants that help protect cellular DNA from free-radical damage.*
· Frankincense, Lemongrass, and Niaouli essential oils have been shown to support cellular apoptosis (cellular death) and renewal.*
· Grapefruit, Green Mandarin, Lime, and Tangerine also provide antioxidant protection, while supporting cellular health and repair.*
There are three ways to use essential oils: Aromatic/diffused, topical, and internal. For the most comprehensive approach to support your cellular health, use these oils IN you, ON you, and AROUND you every day, all day!
Interesting Fact: The range of essential oil chemistry is such an exact match to the chemistry of the human body, it is clear these aromatic compounds were created for this purpose: To support the health of cells and direct the many biological processes necessary for us to thrive!
