The hierarchy of competence, defined by management coach Martin M. Broadwell, describes our learning process in terms of our awareness and competence.
Unconscious incompetence: You’re ignorant of what you don’t know.
Conscious incompetence: You’re aware of what you don’t know, but you haven’t taken steps to learn more.
Conscious competence: You’re actively learning and acquiring knowledge about a subject.
Unconscious competence: You’ve mastered a subject so extensively that you may forget or take for granted how much you truly know.
As we become aware of what is unknown, we are challenged to take steps to learn more (level two). And in active learning, we take those steps to a new level of doing (level three). Moving from level two to three involves awareness AND doing.
