Relationships are a central part of our lives, deserving our care and attention, at fluctuating levels, over the course of a lifetime. The demands of a given situation can dramatically increase the amount of care and attention, and this can leave you feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, guilty, empty, and even angry.
There are more people in this situation, rising up to meet the demands of a situation to care for a loved one, than we might realize...likely you are one of them...or have been...or will possibly be at some point in the future.
As the mother of a child who requires 24/7 nursing care, here are some things I've learned:
You cannot give what you do not have...so make sure you get what you need to serve your loved ones, or those in your care, well.
You may feel your needs pale in importance when compared to their needs, but the truth is your needs are equally important. You cannot pour from an empty cup so make sure you fill your cup first.
Accept help when offered, from wherever it comes.
Ask for help. You will be surprised at how willing others are to help you. Sometimes, they just don't know what you need and are just waiting to be asked.
Finally, recognize the incredible vulnerability felt by the "cared for" when in this situation, and the reciprocal humble postures which can facilitate feeling safe enough to surrender their will to your care.
When you feel weighed down by the burdens of life, apply a drop of Melissa essential oil over your heart to feel lightness in your being. When you feel depleted or overwhelmed, apply a few drops of Wintergreen essential oil on your fingertips and run your fingers out across your shoulders to release those burdens and feel rejuvenated.
You have angels all around you. Petition the Holy Spirit to send His guardians to lift and strengthen you for the joy-filled task you've been given.
Wishing you an abundance of health and love!
