I love the power of Aroma. Our sense of smell is more complex than any of our other senses. There are many aromas for each of us which bring back powerful memories and most times, powerful emotions with them.
I remember the smell of cigars on my grandfather’s wool sports jacket as he read my favorite stories to me. I remember the smell of walking into the bakery after church on Sunday morning with my Father…I felt safe and special holding his hand. I remember the smell of the sea as we drove towards the beach for a family outing…now I go to the sea, take a deep breath and find childhood peace, and comfort washes over me. All these smells bring back powerful memories and elicit even more powerful emotions inside of me.
What’s your most powerful smell memory? How does this actually work?
“The human nose is capable of distinguishing between something on the order of a trillion different scents.” (Joseph Stromberg, March 20, 2014, Smithsonian.com)
Smell is the fastest way to affect mood and the quickest way to get into the deepest parts of the mind-brain. There are smell receptors on EVERY organ of the body! As you inhale, aromatic molecules travel to the olfactory bulbs, which are linked directly to the emotional (limbic) seat of the brain. This is how inhalation creates an immediate emotional impact.
Therefore, when we use essential oils aromatically, there are many therapeutic benefits* which impact the various systems of the body:
Open airways and promote easy breathing;
Calm nervous or anxious feelings;
Reduce tension and ease stress;
Increase alertness;
Promote more restful sleep;
Improve mood; and
Improve energy and vitality.
So How Do We Use an Essential Oil Aromatically?
“To use an essential oil aromatically, simply smell the oil directly from the bottle. You can place a few drops of the essential oil into the palms of your hands, rub together vigorously and inhale deeply. Another option is to place a few drops into a diffuser which disperses the oil into the air.” (Emotions & Essential Oils, A Modern Resource for Healing, 2012)
Aromatherapy diffusers are any device that helps disperse essential oil into the air. They range from nebulizers that break down the molecules of essential oils to pendant diffusers you wear around your neck. A diffuser can be as simple as tissue paper scented with a few drops of essential oil; a few drops applied to a cotton ball that is clipped to the vent of your car or simply put it on you and become a human diffuser!
