What’s in a Drop of Essential Oil?
Essential oils have become more common these days, found in so many different products. Although they are well-known historically for their value and use for health and wellness, the more modern use is primarily for 3 industrialized purposes: (1) Flavor industry; (2) Fragrance industry, and (3) Cosmetics industry.
And with these as its purposes, what impact does that have on the underlying need for quality? We know that the essential oils in this arena are largely synthetic and 100% adulterated as they meet the demands of THOSE industrialized purposes. Most people don’t realize that with ONLY these purposes sought, it results in oils that are devoid of ANY value or uses for those historic health and wellness purposes.
To provide a foundation for reliable, therapeutic outcomes, we MUST assure the quality of the plant material chosen. We MUST assure the quality of the processes of sourcing, harvesting, and distilling the plant material. We MUST assure the purity and potency of the aromatic chemistry of the essential oil itself once distilled. We MUST ask: “What’s in a drop of the essential oil?”
Now, the science geek in me wants to tell you all about the chemical constituents of the aromatic chemistry and the associated health benefits of each. We’ll leave THAT conversation for another article. Today, I want to address an entirely different point.
More Than Just Aromatic Chemistry
Though it is the chemistry which provides a foundation for the amazing health benefits we experience, there’s so much more in that one little drop! Each drop embodies many other qualities, characteristics, and dynamics. These include: Health...Healing...Love...Possibilities...Hope...Friendship...Community. Let me give you a few examples of what I mean.
A drop of Peppermint essential oil shared with a friend in need will definitely open their airways and promote easy breathing.* But that is not the only gift it brings. Maybe the person is experiencing a situation that literally “takes her breath away” and that drop represents a drop of inspiration to help move forward and breathe easy again.
A drop of the Console essential oil blend combines sweet florals and the grounding aromas of Frankincense and Sandalwood to help promote positivity and dispel negative feelings in moments of sadness or grief. But in those moments of grief, it is so much more. It is like an oil hug! I’ve often consoled a person with a hug after putting on this amazing aroma. As we embrace, I feel them “hug me longer” as they breathe in my love and compassion, represented by that aroma. Then I hand them a bottle of this blend and remind them to simply breathe in another hug from me at any moment of need.
A drop of Ginger essential oil is one I share when a person has a tender tummy or to ease occasional indigestion and nausea.* Perhaps a contributing source of their digestive discomfort is not being able to “digest” what is happening in life at that moment. Ginger’s warm and spicy aroma can also help to energize and empower an individual, while calming feelings of powerlessness. This is a gift that goes beyond and expands the meaning of a “digestive aid”.
A drop of Wild Orange essential oil in your hands can easily bring a smile to your face, even when a smile seems so far away. Its chemistry is known for its uplifting and energizing properties, but more importantly, it can imprint a positive memory today to recall when needed in the future.
A drop of an essential oil with pure and potent chemistry may provide a drop of hope in situations where you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to be working. A drop of an essential oil from God’s pharmacy may open an individual to new and exciting possibilities.
